1. In a few sentences, tell us about your background, focusing on your education, professional experience, and leadership roles that prepared you for this position?
I’ve been a Registered Nurse for 24 years, formally manager of the ER at St. Davids Main before transitioning to my current role as Chief Nurse Executive for Austin State Hospital, managing over 500 Nursing staff. I hold a Master of Science degree from Texas Tech with a focus in Leadership/Administration.
I’ve lived in Buda for over 20 years and have served my community on several boards/commissions:
- Former Board member Hays CISD Council of PTAs
- Buda Bonds Oversight Committee
- President Cullen Country HOA
- Board member Buda Police Academy Alumni Association
- Graduate Buda Police/Citizens Academy
- Senior Adjunct Professor, Concordia University
Instructions: For the next questions, please limit your responses to 100 words each.
2. Many residents are dissatisfied with road conditions, traffic congestion, and limited sidewalks in Buda. What specific steps would you take to improve mobility without overburdening taxpayers?
The first symptom of a city's growing pains is traffic. I appreciate the work of the Council and staff to prioritize mobility. More than a half dozen mobility projects are in motion that will improve traffic/road conditions. As a nurse and not a politician, I'm trained to focus on details because small things make big impacts. Let's stay on time and on budget.
3. Many in our city are fearful of the warrantless and extrajudicial removal of Latino members of our community by federal authorities. Where do you stand on the federal government’s deportation agenda?
We cannot preserve our small town feel if we lurch into national politics. We can control how we treat people as a city, making certain all citizens are treated fairly and are afforded their full constitutionally guaranteed rights and that should be our focus. I commit to keep partisan politics out of city hall. Let's support neighborhoods, keep our families and children safe, fill potholes, improve parks, manage growth, and support small businesses.
4. With Buda's rapid growth, managing water resources and wastewater infrastructure is increasingly critical. How do you plan to ensure sustainable water supply and efficient wastewater systems to meet the needs of current and future residents?
Expanding our "purple pipe" network that repurposes wastewater is key. Additionally, incentivizing rainwater capture, no-flush urinals, native landscaping, tree canopy expansion, and other best practices are part of the puzzle. As new growth comes in, we need to measure their water impact and require them to provide remediation based on that data. Managing our city’s water resources and wastewater infrastructure is crucial and of the upmost importance.
5. Many of Buda’s most difficult roads are not owned by the city. How will you work with Hays County, TXDOT and CAMPO to ensure Buda’s transportation issues are addressed, including on the east side of IH-35 and the intersection of FM 967 and FM 1626?
Eastside roads are mostly in the County and cannot be annexed for many more years. The Mayor & Council have done a great job putting localized solutions in play, but we need to engage elected officials and solicit major funding from Capitol Hill to the County Courthouse, because a regional approach is required to solve a major regional problem.
6. As Buda continues to grow, balancing development with quality of life is essential. How would you manage new residential and commercial developments coming to Buda to ensure future projects align with the city's capacity and values?
Buda is a very desirable community, but the unbridled growth of recent years has dragged down quality of life and hurt our small town feel. We need to include the voice of the neighborhoods from an early stage, end the agreements that allow developers to ignore our rules, and trust that defending our shared values and priorities will keep Buda the little town we love.
7. What new business would you most like to see in Buda and how might you attract them to the city?
The Economic Development Corporation and Greater Buda Chamber of Commerce are unmatched in cities of our size in both attracting new businesses, and supporting existing businesses. Keeping an up to date leakage study that shows the deficiencies in our market is priority one, but keeping everything small, local, and unique is a close second.
