What is your history of supporting Democratic organizations and/or candidates?
My history of supporting democratic organizations in Hays County is limited until recently. However, I did support my wife in her election for tax assessor during the 2024 election cycle, by block walking, and calling voters.
What, if any, experience do you have with non-partisan volunteering and community engagement in Hays County?
I have no experience with non-partisan volunteering in Hays County. My experience is limited to Travis county. However, as I am campaigning, I am learning more about the community and its needs, so you will see me in the future giving back.
The cost of living in Hays County has skyrocketed. Within the specific authority of the office you are seeking, what concrete steps will you take to address affordability, housing stability, or the economic burden on taxpayers?
The cost of living has gone up significantly, and families are feeling it. Before we can really talk about affordability, we have to make sure the commissioners court is being a good steward of taxpayer dollars. That means identifying waste, cutting what we do not need, and using what we already collect as efficiently as possible so we can keep the tax rates stable, possibly lowering them.
In addition, we should exhaust every federal and state grants that are earmarked to help families who are struggling. But keeping with that same idea of stewardship, I believe we need stronger oversight on how those grant dollars are used. Not to add more red tape, but to make sure the money actually reaches the people and programs that need it most. Lastly, bringing the aforementioned items together, we can look into housing affordability, through close collaboration with cities and zoning to make sure all of hays county residents can live here and stay here.
Our region faces historic drought conditions. Our groundwater resources are threatened by pressure from development and drought. How will you prioritize water conservation and environmental stewardship when making decisions regarding development, land use, or legal disputes involving natural resources?
I believe the water issue needs some additional oversight when issuing water service to developers. Again, the idea is to not slow progress, but at the same time as commissioners, we have to be proper stewards of our precious resources and recognize the true environmental impact. In the past, it seemed as though growth was the priority and that was understandable, now we need to shift gears and make protecting our water a number one priority.
Hays County is becoming an attractive target for Data Centers that use a significant amount of water and electricity to service primarily non-local data requests. How can we balance technological advancement while preserving our resources?
Data centers have been a hot topic as more want to come to Hays county. I would support a comprehensive plan that protected our water supply and electricity. Another concern is noise pollution and job impact. Without these concerns being addressed, I cannot in good conscience support a data center, that is how I will protect the hard working families of Hays County.
A judge recently overturned the 2024 Hays County Road Bond due to insufficient public notice, and that decision is being appealed. What processes will you follow to ensure appropriate notice and public input in the decisions the county faces?
When the court ruled the road bond did not provide enough notice, and now that ruling is being appealed, the easy answer is to simply follow the policy and procedures already established. Working with the IRS for decades has taught me to follow policy and procedures to the letter of the law. Whether you agree with them or not, you must abide by them.
What do you consider the most urgently needed road projects in your district and how will you ensure the work is done?
I believe the most urgent roads that need to be addressed are high crash areas East of IH-35. Windy Hill, GoForth, Turnersville, Satterwhite are just a short list of problem areas. The east side has needed the county's attention for a while, and it is time we get a court to provide the resources necessary to make all of the roads safer and drivable but especially for the east side. I will be accountable and an advocate to prioritize the east side of IH-35 if I am elected.
What Democratic principles are most important to you and how will they inform your actions as a commissioner?
The most important democratic principle is to support a health district that can provide much‑needed medical care for people like my disabled daughter when there is no other place to turn for aid. When the federal government has failed our residents, Hays County can step up to provide essential health care for all, especially our elderly and disabled communities who cannot care for themselves. I will support a true comprehensive plan to make sure all of our residents get the care they need.
Yes or no, did you use AI to assist you in answering any of these questions?
