In your own words, please describe what a Justice of the Peace does.
Justice of the Peace (JP) serves the constituents of Hays County. The responsibility of a JP encompasses hearing cases from civil, criminal, and administrative laws. These laws include pre and post judgments, traffic offenses, juvenile law, park and wildlife offense, and warrants. Other laws that administered in the JP courts are pretrial motions, default judgments, appeals, debt/small claims, evictions, and administrative hearings (animal cruelty, handgun denial/suspension, tow hearings, truancy, and inquest (death investigations). Justice of the Peace are the only judges on call 24-7, because Hays County does not have a Medical Examiner. In conclusion, we serve and make decisions on the facts of the case with fairness. My motto: “Serving with Integrity, Leading with Fairness.” As a JP, I am also responsible for training clerks and interns in my office.
How do you handle making difficult decisions, especially ones you may not personally agree with?
I focus on the facts. I also remove my personal feelings from the decision process.
What Democratic values will you apply to your work once elected?
As a judge, my values remain non-partisan because I serve the entire community. It is my job to make sure that I am fair, impartial, and consistent.
Yes or no, did you use AI to assist you in answering any of these questions?
