Candidate Q&A – Amanda Calvert – Justice of the Peace 2-2

What’s your favorite place in Hays County?

Uncharted Adventures in Kyle is probably my family’s favorite place. It’s a veteran owned, small business, with a great atmosphere. They have smash rooms, splatter paint rooms, ax throwing and escape rooms.  We had our son’s adoption celebration there and the staff was so nice, accommodating  and supportive.

What’s your history of supporting Democratic organizations prior to your run for office?

My history starts when I was in College at Texas State University studying Political Science. I had the privilege of being part of the election of Barack Obama into office and participated in political events at the school. I’ve given my support to the strong Democratic Candidates in elections past and supported local Democrats with their bid for office, such as District Court Judge Sherri Tibbe, who was previously the District Attorney who hired me at the District Attorney’s Office.

Have you ever donated and/or voted for a Republican? If so, why and to whom?

I haven’t donated to any Republican campaigns. However, I was in support of Christopher Johnson for County Court at Law Judge because there was no Democrat opposition and I know him to be one of the most intelligent and kind people that I know. I also supported and voted for Beverly Crumley as District Clerk. Our offices had worked together for years and she was exceptional at her job. I feel that, and I believe many will now agree with me, that was the reasonable choice.

What is your biggest liability or weakness as a candidate, and what is your response to people who may hold that against you?

I think many would view the fact that I am not an attorney as a liability or weakness as a candidate as well as my age. I would say my education and experience is more than sufficient to successfully take on this position. I have ten years experience in the criminal law arena in our county. Regarding my age, I am old enough to be President of the Untied State’s and have always been ahead of my time in leadership positions. I started supervising all the staff and administrative processed for felony cases in Hays County at 27 years old. My division has performed with excellence in those ten years.

How has your educational background prepared you for this position? What specific college coursework prepared you for the office to which you aspire?

When I began my education, I never imagined it would be so perfect for preparing me for this position. I have my BA in Political Science which prepared me to be a part of politics and understand the government. I minored in Sociology which showed me about the different facets of society and people. Then I attended the Graduate Program for Legal Studies which brought me into the legal field.

How do you maneuver around the big personalities in the legal community?

I have spent a decade working with attorneys, judges, and elected officials. It can take an assertive person to communicate with these big personalities. I find that being knowledgeable, having a good work ethic, being realistic  and responsive is an easy way to earn the respect of strong personalities and ensure your voice is heard in all situations.

How do you feel about abortion access? How will you support women on this issue?

I believe safe abortion access is a necessary. When the new laws on abortion passed, it was honestly one of the scariest political experiences I had lived. It was one of the things that furthered my desire to run for office. In my personal life I advocate for safe abortion access.

What Democratic values will you apply to your work once elected?

I think educating our community about their rights and responsibilities and inspiring our community members to participate in the decisions that affect their lives are values I think we should focus on. Making sure marginalized communities members are treated equally, making sure our legal process is just, fair, and maintains integrity are more of the values I will bring to the office.
