In your own words, please describe what the District Clerk does.

The District Clerk is the keeper of records for the District Court. Our office oversees records for felony cases and civil cases such as divorces, adoptions, lawsuits and more. We are also tasked with the facilitation of the jury process and state mandated reporting.

What are the most important issues facing the District Clerk’s office and how will you address them?

Currently, the most important issues facing my office are staff compensation for Chief Deputy Clerks and the increased need for more office space. I believe our Chief Deputy Clerks are highly underpaid. The Chief Deputy Clerks’ positions are the only positions I advocated for re-grading in my 2026 budget because they are so grossly underpaid. Although the re-grading was not approved by the Commissioner’s Court, the court and Human Resources assured me as well as the rest of the county that there would be a salary analysis to ensure appropriate pay of all positions in the 2027 budget. A second issue facing my office as well as many other offices within the Government Center is a lack of sufficient office space. I intend to prioritize the digitization of records in 2027 with hopes of creating additional space that our office will be able to utilize in the future without needing additional construction. We have already converted our conference room and storage room into offices, and there does not appear to be any additional space granted to the District Clerks office in the Government Center Master Plan for the future.

What is your history of supporting Democratic organizations and/or candidates prior to your run for office?

I’m a sustaining member of the Hays Democratic Party, Kyle/Buda Area Democrats, and the Hays Young Democrats.

What, if any, experience do you have with non-partisan volunteering and community engagement in Hays County?

I was previously a certified advocate for the Hays Caldwell Women’s Center and a part of the Hospital Response team for victims of abuse and sexual assault. I was also a mentor with the Seedling mentorship program, for children whose caregiver(s) are incarcerated or deported. I was also a volunteer and ambassador for PAWS Shelter of Central Texas. I was a licensed foster parent and current adoptive parent through CPS.

What Democratic principles are most important to you and how will they inform your actions as a District Clerk?

As District Clerk, I have worked and will continue to work to ensure marginalized community members are treated equally. In addition, I believe the role of District Clerk is fundamental to making sure our legal process is just and fair. I intend to continue to bring my values of integrity, equity and fairness to all aspects of the District Clerk’s Office operations.

Yes or no, did you use AI to assist you in answering any of these questions?

No, I’m a writer, and I hate AI and the water it wastes, and I think it should be heavily regulated or outlawed to save humanity or only used as a last resort. I’d rather have typos (but this was proofread by a human).
